In August of 1974, Tim was born into a young Irish-Italian family in upstate New York. His twenty-one year old father worked as a clerk for a small family-owned grocery store. His sixteen year old mother hadn't yet entered her sophomore year of high school, ultimately dropping out. It was in February of 1977 when Tim became a big brother, but soon the boys' parents began to break apart. What was once a very peaceful home turned into a chaotic and regularly volatile environment. Finally in 1978, the young and inexperienced parents agreed to their inevitable divorce. Remaining in New York, the brothers were legally re-assigned custodial guardianship on behalf of the boys' paternal grandparents. Their mother relocated to south Florida. Their father relocated to west Texas. For Tim, who was just four years old, the transition had been excruciatingly painful. One of his worst memories includes his mother's roadside hug before driving off. Too young to know any differently, Tim's baby brother experienced a much smoother transition, even referring to the grandparents as his natural mother and father. It wasn't until 1984 when the two boys would again see either parent.
The boys' grandparents had seven children. Tim legally became the eighth child and his baby brother the ninth. Excluding their transplanted son, father to the displaced boys, the depression-era grandparents provided a meager but comfortable 1,050 square foot home for the entire family plus one great-grandmother. Living quarters were so tight in the three bedroom, one bathroom house that Tim and his brother were forced to share a twin-sized mattress bed up until entering the ninth grade. Grandfather managed a small chain of grocery stores. Grandmother was a homemaker. Still struggling with displacement, Tim found security by connecting emotionally with animals and grew deeply immersed in his school work. Many of Tim's peers considered him the class nerd. In the fourth grade, he discovered the saxophone and practiced endlessly. He became self-taught in various wind and brass instruments, along with advanced music theory and composition. It was in his seventh grade when Tim wrote his first musical composition titled The Ball, a duet with saxophone and clarinet. Having received numerous music accolades, Tim was brought on as a performer in a local professional pops orchestra, and eventually graduated from the Serling School of Fine Arts, all before his eighteenth birthday.
